I spent three days covering the OFSAA Track & Field Championships here in London at TD Waterhouse Stadium for the London Free Press. With a massive downpour literally half an hour before the start of the event, things were looking shaky on Day 1, but the weather subsided, and the high school athletes from across Ontario were able to compete. I was shocked to learn that this track meet is the second largest gathering of athletes in North America. I was also shocked to learn I’d forgotten my sunscreen …. and now I look like Rudolph with a bright red nose. Despite radiating heat like a nuclear reactor for three days, I came through and produced some of my better sports work in some months. Here’s the highlights:

Katie Schurr, left, of Medway, loses her footing through the water trough during the Open Women's 2000m Steeplechase Final

Madeleine Davidson, of Toronto, catches her breath on the track after running in the Senior Girls 3000m Finals

Kelly Hennesy, left, unties her shoes as Tilly Greenfield, right, catches her breath after running in the Junior Girls 3000m Finals

Alysha Newman, of Mother Theresa Secondary, launches herself towards the bar during the Midget and Junior Girls Mixed Pole Vault competition at the OFSAA Track and Field Championships at TD Waterhouse in London on Saturday, June 5th. Newman set a new OFSAA record height of 3.75m, beating the record the previous record of 3.26m which she set last year.

Mitchell Mazzuca, sporting shaved lightning bolts, sets his blocks prior to running in the Midget Boys 400m Finals

Gregory MacNeill, of Mother Teresa, runs down the final straight as competitor Aaron Brown, of Birchmont Park, lies injured on the track behind him during the Senior Boys 200m Finals
